Fun & Educational DIY At-Home Activities For Kids During COVID-19 Outbreak

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, health officials are insisting that everyone practice social distancing to help slow the spread of the virus. As a result, many businesses and institutions have closed down, including daycares, schools, and non-essential services. Even government health officials are recommending that parents do not bring their kids to playgrounds in order to try and keep everyone safe and healthy. As kids are now staying at home for full days instead of going to school or daycare, parents will need to try and keep them busy, but also help them continue to learn during this time at home.

So, here are 4 fun and educational DIY activities that parents can do with their kids while staying home amidst COVID-19:

Toilet Paper Roll Rain Stick

This DIY craft only needs four household items to create: a toilet paper or paper towel roll, rice, aluminum foil, and duct tape. However, kids can take this activity even further by decorating their DIY rain stick with stickers, markers, and other craft items that are available to them. By making the rain stick, kids can use their creativity skills, and also develop some of their musical abilities too. With their newly created rain stick, kids can follow along to songs and learn to keep rhythm. To find full step-by-step instructions on how to make this DIY craft, watch this video.

Baking/Cooking

Baking and/or cooking with kids can be another easy and simple educational activity that can keep kids entertained and engaged while staying at home. While baking or cooking, parents can use this activity to teach their kids fractions while measuring out some of the ingredients. This is a practical way that kids can come to understand fractions in a fun and easy way. Not only can baking/cooking be a fun activity, but it results in a delicious snack or meal after all the hard work is done too!

Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano

This is a fun and popular science experiment that can be done at home as it only requires baking soda, vinegar, and some craft materials to make the volcano (newspaper for paper mache or playdough). Although this DIY activity is a bit on the messy side, it can be a great way for kids to learn the science of chemical reactions.

Practice Spelling with Pipe Cleaners

This activity is geared towards younger children as spelling is an important part of their learning and development. Parents along with the help of their children can make letters out of pipe cleaners. Twisting and transforming the pipe cleaners into different letters can help them develop their fine motor skills, and then kids can practice spelling out different words with the letters that they made. This is an easy DIY activity that can provide some mess-free fun in addition to helping kids develop their literacy skills!

Staying at home and coming up with activities to do during COVID-19 can definitely be a challenge, especially with kids at home; however, it is important that everyone practices social distancing to prevent further spread of the virus. So, hopefully, these DIY activities will help families enjoy their time together at home, while still giving kids fun learning opportunities during these circumstances.
